What word searches practice
They strengthen visual scanning, letter recognition, and familiarity with spelling patterns. They do not, by themselves, teach comprehension or fluency on connected text. Think of them as a side dish, not the main course of reading block.
Make them “count” with a follow-up
After the search, assign one of: use five found words in a paragraph; sort words by vowel sound; draw a quick sketch for three nouns; or quiz a partner on definitions. The puzzle becomes the hook; your follow-up carries the standards alignment.
Accessibility notes
Some students with visual tracking difficulties may fatigue on dense grids. Offer enlarged print, highlighter strips, or a reduced word bank. Lexend-style readable fonts on the surrounding instructions (like on this site) also help when students read the task on a screen before printing.
